Working poor families often lack the support systems upon which many rely, or have exhausted them during the health crisis of the child. Even families who are lucky enough to have health insurance that covers congenital birth defects, cancer, and severe injuries, are faced with the additional responsibilities of special childcare, increased medical appointments, transportation, and treatments. A national study recently found that a child with special health needs has twice the effect as the loss of one adult wage earner on family finances. Working parents must make the choice to reduce their work hours or resign from their jobs because of the demands of a special needs child; their only apparent option may be reliance on government support, creating a cycle of dependence and poverty. Our target population is low-income families facing housing instability as a result of caring for a child with special health needs, and are willing and able to attain their maximum self-sufficiency. Although many resources and ‘hospitality house’ programs exist for families while their child is hospitalized, transitional programs for families after the child is discharged cannot be found in our community. In our research and communication with local agencies who work with our target group, the total estimate of families who would benefit from Wisdom’s Hope is between 150 and 200 families per year in the Dallas area alone.
